This week has been an interesting one. The Guardian has revealed the risk of a talent drain of the UK’s teachers predicated by the Government stealing our pensions, creating a monster that is out of control called OFSTED and people generally being mean to us. This Is leading to unprecedented levels of stress. My dilemma… [Read more…]

1999 was a good year. I re-discovered a love of reading ignited by two classic pieces of literature set around children.  I would dispute that they are children’s book but I seriously missed out as a kid – by not knowing about these books. Sharing books with a group of post  SATs year 6 children… [Read more…]

Well this is an exciting post to write… Inspired by the incredible event in a field in the arctic, I mean Oxenhope.  The event that will go down in history as the first #CampEd. We (Steve Wheeler,  Oliver Quinlan, Edd Bolton, Jason Truscott and the team) have been hatching the plans for Pelecon13.  By our… [Read more…]

Alec Curos just spoke at Pelecon.net . He showed this video: His message is simple – how vulnerable are we prepared to be in order to help our children be the best? Technophobes: Are you fearful of technology or vulnerability? Teachers: Are you scared of change? Of Accountability? Of losing control? The future is here –… [Read more…]

Today two newspapers, the Independent and the Daily Mail report that the Deputy PM is determined to ensure that the most disadvantaged children in society will receive 15 hours of free child care. This is either means that “Taxpayers will have to fork out £1 billion for Nick Clegg’s ‘obsession’ to create a ‘nanny state’… [Read more…]

If you are reading this, then well done! Your letter of application worked.  Now you have to hope that you can deliver the goods on the day.   To be honest, hope doesn’t get you a job.  Planning and preparation does. Now you have to plan a short lesson, you probably haven’t been given a… [Read more…]

This is a quick one written on my phone whilst heading to the beach – its tshirt weather here today . So it’s probably full of typos – I will tidy it up tonight. There’s this hash tag…… It is full of the usual moans from teachers about being over worked. Stimulated by another slightly… [Read more…]

If you use the information in this post, please make a donation to a charity close to my heart: Farms for City Children (set up by Michael & Clare Morpurgo)   Application forms for primary teaching jobs are all fairly standard, and will need to be accompanied by a Supporting Statement or Letter of Application.  Although… [Read more…]

I’m writing this in response to a wonderful blog by @faynichollsBed.  She has written asking a deep question; ‘When has one earned the right to tell the truth?’   This is a really measured piece and skilfully recognises the difference between challenging ethos and values of ‘teachers’ and challenging the style and ability of those… [Read more…]

School Improvement – Satisfactory……damn with faint praise

January 22, 2012

Two blogs in one day: I just spotted this as someone’s twitter avatar. It relates to this article in the Guardian and this press release by OfSTED. 3000 schools serving 1,000,000 have sustained performance of ‘satisfactory’ through two consecutive inspections. Translation: 1,000,000 children are in the care of professionals who do not aspire to be good.… [Read more…]
